membench is a useful program that will benchmark your system by reading and writing in blocks of 4, 8, 16, ..., 8192 kilobytes of memory and measuring the access speed. This is useful to find out how the CPU L1/L2 caches works and what s the access speed to these caches, also useful to compare different CPUs (Intel vs AMD).
